Charging without a driveway

Can an EV work without private parking? Test the week before buying.

A practical UK route through on-street solutions, nearby public charging, workplace charging, costs, reliability and the backup plan for busy days.

The decision route

Six checks, in the order that reduces regret.

01

Map the normal week

List where the car is parked overnight, at work and during routine errands. Note dwell time, walking distance, connector type and whether bays are commonly occupied.

02

Check council rules

Never trail a cable across a pavement without an approved solution. Ask the local authority about cross-pavement channels, permissions, parking restrictions and installation standards.

03

Check grant eligibility

A current household on-street parking grant may contribute up to £500 where an approved cross-pavement solution is installed. The applicant, property, vehicle and installer must meet the rules.

04

Price the realistic mix

Model the percentage charged at work, destination, slower public and rapid chargers. Include subscriptions, idle fees and parking charges—not only pence per kWh.

05

Test reliability

Visit the intended chargers at the times you would use them. Check recent status, payment method, lighting, accessibility and what happens if both are unavailable.

06

Set a backup

Keep at least one alternative network or location and enough battery buffer to reach it. A workable plan has redundancy, not a single perfect charger.

Save before acting

Questions worth answering in writing.

Grant and permission rules vary. Check the current GOV.UK scheme, your local authority and an authorised installer before paying.

  1. Is the bay reliably available at my normal time?
  2. Can I pay contactlessly without a subscription?
  3. What is the total price including parking or idle fees?
  4. Does my council permit an approved cross-pavement solution?
  5. Who owns and maintains the equipment?
  6. Where is the dependable backup charger?
